Over the next 3-6 months my project for one client is to construct 8 buildings in 3D and render them hyper realistically. They are to be rendered for A0 posters as well as for animation.
The way this project was negotiated was that the equipment necessary was purchased and provided by the client, they would cover a few other costs, but other than that this is sponsored by myself as 1. I wanted the client to proceed with the project, 2. I didn't want the client to be concerned with or have to handle cost overruns, 3. This is a foundation item for my portfolio and as web design isn't a nice job where I'm located (people here are too laid back and acquiring all the necessary info from clients is mission impossible) this item may prove instrumental in launching me into the professional architectural conceptualisation / modelling arena and so be available for large commissions. (such as this one,... but unsponsored )
The workflow is as follows - the plans are generated in an architectural program - the objects are exported to Cinema where the objects which have lost integrity (seems to be a few) are reconstructed or substituted with items chosen from my object libraries. The textures are chosen from my archives or in a few cases created in Photoshop. The textures are large so as to achieve the necessary realism at high res. The final scene will be rendered with full radiosity & antialiasing, shadow casters, etc. in order to provide that just so touch. Test renders at minimal size with basic textures will ensure correct final results. Previously I've been too eager to see results, but now time is of the essence, as finishing this project in 2 months will be more beneficial not to mention rewarding from a accomplishment pov. However I'm working on a few websites during development so 3-6 months or more may be the case.
Attached are the preview renders of the first large house. These are from the architectural program - the textures will be more defined in Cinema.
The back render is with aa set to normal which accounts for the graniness.
Subsequent renders will be posted when ready. Criticism is much appreciated.
The houses to be constructed...
1. Upmarket home
2. Unit in a complex
3. Standard house
4. Beach house
5. Commercial shop front
6. Futuristic
7. Apartment / connected Duplex
8. Large versatile house
(9. Hotel , 10. Ethnic)
The objective is to display the installation of security products around homes - windows, gates,...
I really won't really comment just yet since these are wips, I guess the majority of grey is overpowering and the pool looks like a decal, lighting looks a little low, other than that I will wait a bit. It looks like you are progressing in your talent and don't take my lack of comments as a negative, I just feel more refined renderings are needed to really comment

Added the roof and railings.
Once I've exported everything to Cinema and worked on it a bit then it will be more commentable - although everyone can crit the structure and perhaps suggest how it can be improved.
Sort of settled on the following layout. Now I have a week of reconstructing the entire house and filling it with furniture, placing lights, curtains, birdbaths, etc. The pool is being designed separately and will be dropped into the back garden when ready - to replace the eyesore decal one shown.
What exterior texture should I use?
I was thinking of plain white paint, maybe a horizontal band of color to add interest.
Modeling is looking good so far, my one comment on that is at the front entry portico, the columns shouldn't just extend to the underside of the roof deck, there should be a flat soffit or beams that the roof rafters rest on and the columns support IMHO.
Color, well that is subjective, just looking at it and not having tried anything, I think the wings could be one material to give it a horizontal emphasis and the upper portion at the back and sides and central portion on the front another material. Just a quick idea, not certain. Keep us updated, working so far.

I like the modeling. However, the texturing and lighting... need some work. Being a WIP, I am sure you are leaving this for last.
What does bug me, is the textures of the columns. Seem like some tiled bump-mapped stars? I think they would look better in rough concrete. Just my opinion though

Modeling is looking nice. I know your work still in WIP. I am just pointing few area that can help you to rectify. In your images few area seems lights is leaking. I think you have to work more with lighting and rendering and you need to work more with the water also. It is just a suggestion........

Thanks everyone for your comments - sorry I haven't replied but been very busy with many different projects. The company I'm doing this for is having me model all their products and getting these ready for a brochure has delayed the completion of this large mansion. However I'm at an advanced stage with it and once I've extricated myself from current deadlines will be able to complete it.
Looks nice. may be you can work more with the lights and shadows. Looks bit flat.....
