Working on textures and lighting since I now have the power (new Intel macs) to use more complex materials and reflections etc.
This is an image loosely based on an image I saw in a magazine a while back. Modeled in SketchUp and Modo and rendered in Modo. Some components I made, others were from FormFonts.
Hey Jake, Very nice work. Lighting and rendering is great. Specially I love the visual. Fantastic stuff. Little tweak in background your scene would be more beautiful

Yes it is blurry, obscured glass is like what you would use in a bathroom for some privacy. The blurriness obviously isn't from the angle of the glass to the viewer since the class in the back straight across from you is blurry as well. A small item, but it makes it so the person wonders what it is since it doesn't really look like glass.

I think that background is what makes the blurry effect... the HDRI...
Jake, could you just put some other background, less blurry, otherwise, the render is great! I like the compositon and materials, lightning also... here we are a bit picky... we tend to comment on every little thing ...
But, since I am very interested in Modo capabilities for such projects, I would ask you to post some more please!
And, question, did you used for skylight HDRI only or you have some area lights in windows?
Oh, I appreciate the feedback. Be picky. I just wondered how he meant obscured.
I think the blurriness of the horizon give the impression that the glass is frosted or etched. My actual HDRI is reasonably sharp. Somehow the scale of the HDRI when mapped within Modo is 5 or 6 times the resolution so it makes it blurry. This doesn't not happen in Cheetah, so I don't know why it happens in Modo. Doesn't bother me much as I usually replace exterior views anyway. Hadn't done that here yet.

The lighting is real simple_one directional light for sun and the HDRI for general illumination. My HDRIs are made so horizon up is tree-line and clouds and horizon down is a neutral grey a varying values. This will then give me a decent light on overhangs and ceilings. Depending on the need I will darken or lighten the HDRI to adjust for the conditions of the model.
(See attached)
If I used area lights the image would probably be sharper but it's much tougher to get a natural look, for me at least.
Very nice HDRI you got there... Usefull also for exteriors and reflection map...
Yes, I agree, it is always most efficient to use the HDRI only in such scenes with large openings... but, consider some more closed interior with couple of windows only... And the sharpness is also the problem...or to say it in GI technical words, how to get enough samples deeper inside the room...
I always aim for the soft shadows of the columns and windowframes on the cieling, but that is much easier to get with area lights...
Very nice modo render. What's your opinion about modo render engine compared to other renders? Is it easy to use and fast render time?
It's a lot faster than most. You can get good result pretty quickly. I think the quality of the light from Maxwell is better, but the software itself is still not ready for steady use. The new 1.5 release of Maxwell is much improved, but some basic materials (AGS glass) cuases the render to go black.
The only problem with Modo is the lack of any real architect support on the forum. From my experience it has been most effectively used for small vignettes of product shots and some character work.
There are a few architecture and interior types, but the info and the support for this type of work is really light compared to the countless threads about making a whisky bottles, spiders and robots!
