A maxwell/evermotion scene

Okay I decided to do a comparison of the two engines and in regards to how they are setup they are almost identical in regards to materials and and lighting.

Update: Okay heres the raw images side by side both rendered for 15 hours MW- reached SL 19.58 Fry - reached 343.00 passes. Both have Glare applied to them. Some things to notice, the MW cam is a little out of focus really hate how their camera works its always difficult for me to get a crisp render. The Fry black surfaces are not a rough as the MW ones so it will look a little diffferent there as well. Also I over did the floor bump in the Fry version. And on the MW one I didnt texture some of the plant lol.

Heres the stats from each renderer:

Now we have the two images side by side again with same neat image preset used on both the fry noise reduction is a little stronger then what I used on the maxwell version. Then they where both taken into PS and had the same sharpen settings applied and were both downsized to the same size.

Summary in this COMPARISON (thats all it is not defintive im no expert in Fry) first things I see about Fry is sample quality lots of stand out noise after long rendering periods Maxwell tends to dull out the noise it looks like making it less noticable while Fry noise remains strong and rather pronounced. Theres often white specs everywhere especaily regarding blurred reflections ND for the floor is 20 and the metals are 40 so very high ND values since they are in nature very reflective.

Glare yikes Fry is a pain to work with glare I HATE IT and the first reason is its slow very slow making new settings is easy enough even though I have no clue what those sliders do lol you hit the check box and see two sliders side by side they need to be labeled I think as it stands Fry is to slow to trial and error with Glare over 2 minutes per sync when adjusting setting MW does it in a matter of seconds. Secondly diffraction again you see to number areas but dont know what they do and what are those image slots? Are they for an obstacle map and apeture map? Who knows their not labeled so I didnt bother with them. Next thing I noticed about it notice how the glare is really only visible on 3 lights? and nothing else.

Control..... Fry wins in this area hands down. Lighting control and layer blending cant be matched by MW adjusting temps, RGB values and strengths all on the fly is very very cool and we cant forget seperate sunlight control which makes Fry all that more desirable. So both have their strong and weak points. Maxwell quality and speed since 1.5 is alot better then Fry, Fry has much more control over everything and produces sharper images but at the cost of slow clearing noise and speckaled images at times.

Theres more I could cover like displacement and all that but we already know all that.

WOW, Very nice looking scene. I love the lighting and rendering. Fantastic stuff. Specially Glow effects looks great.
I have a doubt about chairs leg. Feels that the floor is hollow and the stem is coming under the floor. May be it is because the chair material is reflecting too much. You can decrease the reflectivity or blur the reflection bit. There can be bit more glow on the floor light. But these are my personal opinion.

Re: A maxwell/evermotion scene

I would turn off the under cabinet lights and call it good, they are destracting, too much lighting going on, but it looks good.

Re: A maxwell/evermotion scene

I love the render. The lights look a bit strong and I'm not crazy about the camera angle. Overall very nice, very clean. Good job man!!

Re: A maxwell/evermotion scene

Seth, I would leave the undercounters, but put a valance in front to block the light from being seen directly by the eye.

I was over to the Fry site the other day to snoop around. You are doing some good work work with Fry. How is that going? Can you tell us more about how they Maxwell and Fry compare speed wise?

By the way, did you abandon Modo?

Ill be honest lol I have no clue what a Valance is if you could please explain this to me I will put it in there lol.

I may have disappeared from the Modo Public forums for awhile doesnt mean im not working on other related Modo things... if you know what I mean

I will return with lots of pretty images for everyone over there in a few months time.

And thank you all for the crits I will be doings some mods to the scene yet again and take into account many of these thoughts.

Re: A maxwell/evermotion scene

Valance would be similar to the vertical faces extending down below the bottom of the cabinets so that the lights were hidden and light downwards while invisible to direct glare.

Very nice little comparison, thank you very much!

Re: A maxwell/evermotion scene

Very nice comparation, thanks!
I like the scene and light is just good for this type of experiment.
From my experience with Vray, such lightning situation, without fill lights is very difficult to make clear (small objects that casts strong light) and you would have to spend some time also to make the clean render with it.

So, I would just like to see in this comparation one shot done with biased rendering engine.

As for conclusion, after you made noise reduction both images are close in qualitty so, in this situation, I would go for the engine with better controls...
