"Architectural Wonder" ContestContest Thread for Contest Entries. Post entries as per Contest Rules Here. Contest closed to further Entries.
My entry is a glass beach house designed to be constructed or deconstructed in a short amount of time to take advantage of the seasons and/or Hurricane threats. It will be constructed out of strong, yet light weight materials (titanium, glass, carbon fiber, beach sand concrete, steel, etc.) Mostly see-though and having the elegance and stream-lined shape of an Angel-fish or Para-sail. Basically something sitting right on the beach that looks as though it ought to be gliding through the water. I will post some concept sketches in several days.
Good luck everyone.

I have live in Florida for some time now, and the idea of a glass beach house SOUNDS cool, but that's a lot of glass to clean, beach mist leaves a nasty film on glass. Now don't let that turn your idea off it's just something to think about, I do however like the idea of a Angel-fish shape...that I would love to see.

ok so I have two links. The first one is some really rough notes and sketches of stuff I want to include on each floor. It's really paired down to bare essentials as I picture this building as short term for like a surfing weekend or getaway.
the second link is a cardboard model I threw together (doesn't look as good as 3D, but I think that intial concept is better handled with paper and scissors than processors and primitives) The buildings transparent "skin" will be the long panels of "glass" fastened to the frame. Also rigging to keep the frame taught. The Apple store in NYC has this great skylight the uses alot of cable and thin titanium rods to hold everything together and that to me is really asthetically pleasing. Also, what with the wind at the beach the structure would probably need an occasional tighening of the rods for tautness. Also, sorry about the low resolution pics of the model. I don't have a digital camera, but Mac luddites will rejoice to the fact that I keep an old Quadra 630 in the corner because it has a working Quickcam I use to do odds and end low-res photos.
...................
yeah I used to spend some time down there and the sliding glass doors on the porch would be caked most of the time. I figured since it's an architectural "wonder" my transparent glass material will be above and beyond the need for newpaper and windex. Luckily there is no salt slime quotient in Lightwave. . . yet.

Love it, good sketches and the model looks really cool! Shame you don't have a better camera!, but I must confess, I don't own a digiatal camera myself Keep up the great work, for some reason Santiago Calatrava's work kind of springs to mind as I read your description and see you model, maybe it is just the sculptural aspect of it and his work?

Allusionist, isn't there a Calatrava exhibition or something going on at UW? The guy is definately an artist when it comes to forms, and visual interest.
Aaron, fantastic work so far hope you can recreate digitally what you have created with your model so far.

If you live in the Seattle area (Yakima, is only 2 hours away) and are a fan, I believe it is going on through to November some time. I haven't gone yet, but I am planning to.

A bit of messing around in Lightwave and the rough shape of it is there, plenty left to do, but I wanted to see how much space I could fit inside the glass sheath for actual living space. So, a couple screen shots have a simple 3d man I found online inside. I guess the eventual "wonder" part of this will eventually be weight and transparency of the building components. It starting to come together like a ship with masts and rigging capable of withstanding the load requirements to hold the glass and or polymer sheath in place, especially at the beach with wind and such.
Aaron,
Looking good so far, recreating your phyical model may be a little difficult in digital 3D, but it looks like you are progressing.
You need to attach (instead of link to) your milestone work such as concept sketch, etc. to your post (if you need help figuring out how, let me know) so that readers can see them without visiting the links. No problem linking images if you have a bunch of examples, but attach the best one of each group so viewers can see your progress. This will also keep this thread valid down the line if you move files, this post will not be filled with dead links and continue to show off your work. Just wanted to make sure you were following the contest guidelines. Great work!
