Marvin de Jong - Chinese Parlement

Just letting you people know that I've entered. ^^

At the moment I'm going for the theme Chinese Subway Station. It will combine the modernization sweeping through China at the moment with it's millenia old cultural heritage. Hopefully I can combine them in a good and balanced way.

Anyways I'll upload sketches as soon as possible.

Greetings Marvin

Re: Marvin de Jong - Chinese Subway

Marvin, welcome abroad! nice to have you with us for AW-II.

yours will be an exciting entry to watch, china is doing great for the last couple of years, making some huge buildings, towers, bridges and dam. Three George Dam will be the largest dam, world has ever seen!!! China also has a very rich past in art and architecture and i am sure you will be able to combine these two era in your concept. good luck

This sounds interesting and with all the stuff going on there now especially with the Olympic's projects, a great context for your project

This sounds awesome. I've been hearing about the modernization lately from around the net. Anxious to see what you got up your sleeves. G.L.

Re: Marvin de Jong - Chinese Subway

Ok time to upload some stuff.

I'll start with 4 of the moodboards I made. I have gathered a lot more research material but haven't put it into moodboards yet. Will do that some other day. Among those is Kyoto Station. Already have quite some ideas in my head. So I apologize for not sketches a great deal of detail and not being extremely accurate.

Re: Marvin de Jong - Chinese Subway

Now the sketches. And the thought behind when it comes to planning.

Well the picture with the temple like building is a sketch of the entrance building. With a layout of the surface buildings. And the giant glass ceiling of the station.

Which will be 221 meters long and 49m wide. The 221m is symbolic for the unification of China which happened in 221 BC. The 49m being symbolic for the founding of the People's Republic of China which was founded in 1949.

The second picture shows a very very basic sketch of the layout of the entrance building. And a rough sketch of what I want to do with one of the sides. I want to create a glass mural the size of the wall with a stylized dragon. The dragon of course being the symbol for China.

I was still pondering if I will do a spiral staircase in the center with a radius of 8m. Or just do a normal staircare. I've since decided to do a normal staircase. Aka just now.
It will house the tourist information office, a high class restaurant and the normal station stuff. Ticket office, kiosk, cafeteria and a supermarket.

In the third picture you can see a small sketch of the glass panel and a top view of the subterranean part of the building. The intention is to have a wide part of the structure to be open thus allowing natural light. And of course allowing someone standing at the top of the stairs to see the entire structure. The levels are better explained in the last sketch.

In this sketch I tried to see if those were acceptable angles. I myself don't really like steep escalators but this may be unavoidable in the end. I'll have to see how much space they take up. Or choose a different structure for the escalators as seen in department stores etc. I ran out of things to say.

Ok will just put one more sketch and a little text about future plans in another post.

Re: Marvin de Jong - Chinese Subway

This is the Arch design. Meant to support part of the structure. I have no clue as to the stresses such a building is under especially the glass ceiling. So I'll probably place these every 25m. I'm thinking of making the glass ceiling out of 25m long components. (except for the last 21m of course ) This way when one part falls or something happens the rest won't go with it. Also I want to decorate the ceiling in some way with a Chinese dragon. Accompanied by a texst of some sort. Will think of what that will be. Attached some dragon references, to see what I'm looking at right now to figure out what kind of design it will be.

Also each floor will have 12 pillars on each side. No carrying pillars. Or at least that's not the planning at the moment. But that may change. With each pillar having the Chinese Hanji of a Chinese Zodiac Animal.

All very stylized of course I don't want to make it too busy. Still figuring out how I can stylize something like the Chinese architecture in a correct good looking way. Because it is such a detailed style itself. Ah well. Will figure it out.

Hope I typed everything I wanted to type now.

Btw thanks for the positive comments about the concept guys.

Ok now I'm pretty sure I typed everything.
