Basically the body is around 1/3 the lenght it should be and the chest going into the stomache and under carriage has a keel bone similar to the keel of a boat. I will attach some images so that you may get an idea on the proper proportions. Even if you are going for a cartoonish character the proportions should be close in most cases with certain features exaggerated IMO.

Yes, kind of bad photos in that the first one, the bird is cold and hunched down to stay warm and the second image it is molting. Tough crowd for you here, but we are trying to help you. I raised rollers and show pigeons as a kid and nursed numerous birds to health including a couple breeds of hawks, not to mention owning parrots and conures in the past, so I kind of know birds and hence, may be a little tough on you when trying to point out proportions.

But if you learn to do proportions correctly your characters will seem a lot more believable to people, whether it is a bird or a man, or even a 'Birdman'!
