....I see the square light pattern is a limitation of Blender? I would think if they had particles, etc. they would have good lighting options. Hmmmmmmmmm!
the square light pattern is a shadow of the light "house" (how you say it in english?).
may be this image can help you to see where the square light pattern come from .

ME,
Lamp shade is what I think you are getting at, got it, if you turn the lamp shade off does the pattern of the light change? I guess it was another entry using Artlantis where this was discussed and not Blender, my bad!

Raytonium, I love your render, very warm feeling. The coffee table is awsome!
I am not entirely sure about the material you used for the sofa: did you use some kind of sub-surface scattering? It gives me a "foamy" feeling.

Raytonium - great images! Mood is warm and inviting and redesigning creative and apropriate... I do not mind that is dark... Love the detailes...
ME - nice mood you got there, is there a way to soften shadows in blender? I heard that there is a renderer for blender which got some more options... forgot it's name ...
Anyway, softening the shadows will get you even better look. Also I suggest some play with Photoshop... Few touches always improve raw renders...
