hey this is great challenge, i think i will freeup some time to work on it, thanks for posting it Russell.
and here a little contribution, i remembered that some time ago i was very interested in modular design (my thesis started with that but turned into a different solution), anyway one of the things that i recall from that time was this studio called Lo-Tek, you might check their website, under residential CHK and CHS, for the container related architectural stuff, and the container mall section, metal management and so forth, lots of references from them.
i'll try to reach some images i got back then to pos as reference too.

Good one, since it is a flash site people will have to go to buildings and then at the bottom left hand menu 'mobile architecture' and then 'mobile dwelling units' MDU or where you directed, but some good stuff, thank!

Very cool charette! I just joined the site and am so excited about taking part in "cargotecture" design! Do I need to signup somewhere or is this an "open" charette?
Open to any member of the community, in challenges we just post in the same thread, easier to check out the work and it seems to promote more participation, so just post your work in this thread, more than one is allowed, it is all about community participation and getting feed back on your work.
As stated previously I believe, the challenge will last around 2 months, if it is not very successful we end it, if it is going on strong still we extend it a bit and post a official end date. There is no real end to when someone can render a scene and post it in the challenges, only a date where we judge and pick the winners

Utilitarian luxury! A desert terrain context defines the single-story program for the shipping container compound, consisting of (4) 20' containers composing the living volume and (2) 20' containers for the sleeping quarters, raised 18 inches above ground for the cooling-effect of air circulation and possible flood plane issues. Strategic openings cut swathes through the volumes to expose views and mitigate sun exposure. Standard 2x4 c-stud framework allows for a typical insulation and drywall application. Sitting 18 inches above ground a polymer-coated canvas by Astrup covers a 16-foot tall welded tube steel element which acts as a mud room entrance (housing a pool bath and laundry facilities). This canvas-element penetrates the interior of the living volume defining the edge of a garage door which opens the end of the living space to the enclosed side yard, accessed via a diamond steel-plated ramp. The entire compound is surrounded by a CMU wall. A pivoting steel and glazed gate-panel closes off the space between the living and sleeping quarters, allowing pets to roam safely around the compound when closed. Barriers under the structure further seal off the area, keeping the compound coyote/varmit-free. Situated at the end of a 60-foot long deck dividing the living and sleeping quarters is a 16-foot tall CMU fireplace which gives verticality to the mostly low-slung components. A large enclosed yard at the back hosts a 60-foot long pool which pokes through the wall enclosure and terminates as a small pond, greeting guests with the soothing sound of falling water. Other features include: An outdoor shower just outside the main bathroom, a livestock grain bin acting as an outdoor bath tub, corrugated metal patio covers, a propane tank and water tank. Two 10-foot containers near the entry serve as storage for Vespas, outdoor furniture cushions and other compound accouterment.
