mainly i think it has something to do with the dark wall paint/color. lighter colors will tend to make the space bigger whilst the darker toned color will provoke the claustrophobic feeling. maybe...

Nice work, I like your wall paint texture, it has a nice amount of gloss, giving it an eggshell quality.
