Here in South Africa we have the problem of extreme poverty where there are whole communities that can't afford proper housing and have to construct homes out of any material they can find. The challenge would be to design a home that is
a. small
b. cheap
c. transportable (not necessarily portable nor mobile)
d. easily assembled.
e. answers the needs of a small family
f. and an additonal adapted version of the design for large families.
The home must include household items and furnishings.

Design a community centre for a poverty stricken populace. What ammenities should be shared and how would they be shared? The hub should provide easy access and pedestrian flow. It must be cheap to construct and the materials used should be easy to transport to the site.

Construct an apartment complex that doubles up as a parking lot. This challenge focusses on how to integrate different needs within a single structure. The design must show the access points for people and traffic. Modellers can use x-ray or cut-away renders to demonstrate construction. You can choose any number of apartments and the size of the parking lot - what must be conveyed is how the two happily co-exist within a structure.

A new airport has been built on a manmade island a fair distance off the coast of a country. The developers have been using a bridge to transport the materials to the site and now have to transform the bridge into a superstructure to ferry traffic to and from the airport. Their guidelines are
a. that it must be visually impressive and creative
b. it must feature support, repair and service facilities for the variety of vehicles travelling the bridge as well as maintenance of the structure, and
c. it can have either viewing platforms, entertainment facilities or something extra that adds to public interest and appreciation of the bridge.
The bridge must not be less than 4kms.

A billionaire has recently bought a 50 storey skyscraper in Manhattan. The building's exterior is dull and boring - it's width and length forms a square and there are no vertical steps in the design or anything else that persuades the viewer that it is anything but a block of concrete, steel and glass. He has commissioned you to change the exterior into something exciting. The city council has approved an extra 10 floors to be added on the top and the scraper can be extended 15 metres laterally on each side. Approval has also been given for extra ground suports if these are necessary. Nothing can be taken away from the basic structure as the city council will not allow the structure to be weakened in any way. You must provide the basic block that you begin with and show the interim stages that are implemented to make it visually dynamic.

An environmental group has recently built a jetty that extends 5kms out from the coast. This has proved popular with the public as the area is a top whale and dolphin observation point. They have contracted you to design an underwater restaurant that is to be added to the tip of the jetty. They want the design to have large viewing windows, and a small car park. It must appear friendly to the whales and the lighting must be subtle so as not to scare them away.

CHING-CHUG industries has developed a unique rail system that can transport pods from residential areas to the central business district. They want you to show how the pod and accompanying mechanisms can be seamlessly integrated into a home. Ideally a family can exit the dining room and climb aboard the pod via a platform area. The pod will then at an opportune moment accelerate along the side track and join the main track at the required speed limit and so safely merge with the traffic on the rail.

The marketing director of a high profile corporation has approached you to help him with a global presentation. The corporation has one of the highest skyscrapers in the world. It insists that it is the tallest structure on earth. Technically 3 competing buildings are taller, however the company demands recognition for the impressive structure and does not wish it to be overshadowed in any way. They want you to render it in 3D using a perspective that will demonstrate its excessive height as well as show that it commandeers a view which is more visually pleasing than the rest. You can submit a fullpage render or a blocked render whichever is more assertive of the scrapers' dynamics.

Altrino Dumonte is an unusual character. He designed and marketed the famous animated Dokkimon series, and is notorious for buying the Sistine chapel, and relocating it to his residence in Washington. This was to compliment the assortment of similar buildings acquired from around the world. He's already grown bored of them and has employed you, the world's greatest architect, to design a building without foundations. He has cleared a large field for the structure and is open to ideas for any natural features, including clifts, rivers, ravines, dunes, etc. He has the money, you just have to say the word. But before he does anything, he would like to see a rendered design of this suspended home. Yes, he wants to live in it once completed. However he stresses that he like statues, ornaments, monuments and such like, and would like people to visit his house to gaze in wonder at this floating, hanging or hovering beauty.
