VOLUME LIGHTS

Mental Ray Volume Lights
I Tried To Implement Jeff Patton's Tut. On Volume Lights And Beam Shader But I Am Stuck With The Following Situation.

Interior Scene Lit By Daylight System That Passes Through Tinted Glass Window Openings. To Make It More Difficult I Added 4 Photometric Spotlights That Focus Their Beams On An Evermotion Object.
I Used A Shader List In The Volume Channel Of The Mr Rendering Tab So As To Combine Two Parti Olume Shaders (one For Mr Sun And One For The Spots). I Included The Spots To The Second Parti Volume Shader And Assume That Mr Sun Uses The First One Since I Dont Know How To Assign It Just To Mr Sun!!!!! :d
The Problems Start When I Want To Add A Beam Shader To The Spotlights. Everything Gets Dark.
I Tried To Move It up in the stack, Before The Parti Volume shader, The Light Came Back But No Halo Effect Around The Spots.

Re: VOLUME LIGHTS

Instead of trying to clump all that together in one complex lump why not just render out the beam shader in it's own pass and add it in post? Or better yet, add the glow/halo effect in post instead of rendering it. Surely that would be faster & give more control.

As to why the existing volume effects darkened when you added the beam effect, maybe it's due to an energy difference between the volume & beam effect? That may or may not be the actual problem, it's just speculation on my part.

Re: VOLUME LIGHTS

Not certain how you set up a "Render Pass" in Maya, in XSI is a command that sets up an additional set of paremeters that can be different from your current renderings and you adjust it for what you want, then when you render out, you can render the current pass or all of them together at once in different files. Not a Maya user, so can't help you out.

Re: VOLUME LIGHTS

In Maya
1. go to window -->> Rendering Editors -->> Render Layer Editor
2. While in Render Layer Editor
- create layer
- highlight and hold right click on that layer, then select Attributes
3. On Attibutes
- browse down then go to Render Pass Options
- there are 5 items to choose for your render pass
Beauty Pass ( default selected)
Shadow
Specular
Color
Diffuse
