Re: daylight and shadow in mr sun

dark shadows can be fix in 2 way in MR, one is fixing your exposure a high contrast image will give you very bright spot and dark shadows.
Other way is changing your gamma, by default is off, you can fix it to 1.8 or 2.2

This article is pretty good about showing ways to adjust your images and gamma settings

Let's help put an end to our low contrast renders!

However it looks like Jeff has the images hosted on his site and I know he is having problems so the images with settings and descriptions are missing right now.

Re: daylight and shadow in mr sun

The Mental Ray Sun/Sky is set up to accurately simulate the real life sun illumination, if your image is to high in contrast it mus be an exposure issue.
Gamma set up should fix this, now if you want to go beyond that, you can give more bounces to your FG 3 or 4 but his will increase your render time,
other option is reduce your sun intensity to 0.3 or less and push up your sky intensity, so you have more Global illumination than direct sun light.

I think what we should ask so that the appropriate solution that fco3d has provided can be applied, is whether it is just the shadows that are too dark or if the surfaces in shade (not directly lit) are too dark as well? If it is the latter then you need to increase the indirect light via FG or alternative method.
