3ds Max 2009 (+Design) - Importons & Irradiance Particles
Written by Jeff Patton Monday, 21 April 2008 06:42
If you already have (or will soon have) access to 3ds Max 2009 and/or 3ds Max Design 2009 then you're going to want to head over to the Maya forum to get the new ctrl.ghost shader. Many, many thanks to Max (not the program...but the man) for creating/sharing these shaders (including a 3ds Max version) that allows us to use the new Importons & irradiance particles.
Here's a direct link to the thread where you'll find the shaders (32 & 64 bit) & more information HERE
Now with the 3ds Max package you'll also get the mrGeomShaderObject.dlo file, place this in your plugins or stdplugs folder. Thanks to Dave (maxplugins.de) for compiling the geometry shader. The Geometry Shader will be our access point to the importons & irradiance particles options.
The zip archive also contains the ctrl_ghost_settings shaders. You'll find both a .dll file & .mi file. Place the ctrl_ghost_settings.dll file in the shaders_autoload subfolder: ex. C:|3ds Max 2009|mental ray|shaders_autoload|shaders
Then place the ctrl_ghost_settings.mi file in your include folder: ex. C:|3ds Max 2009|mental ray|shaders_autoload|include
Now you're all set to start using these new options. To access the settings you'll first create a mr Shader object in your scene then assign the ctrl_ghost shader to it and drag that ctrl_ghost shader to the material editor as an instance copy then edit the settings from the material editor. Not clear enough, here's some screen captures:

You can find more information on these options in the thread listed at the beginning of this entry, and in the mental ray documentation included with 3ds Max. To access the mental ray documentation, go to: Help>Additional help...>mental ray 3.6 Reference

Sorry, I have been out of state for a while, but if you found the solution, posting a link to it helps others not repeat the leg work you have done already.

Sorry about that, but I did not know if it was alright to post this link; however, if it's not appropriate I'm sure you can edit it. This is the link from the ten hour web cast put on by the Illinois Users group, & the ctrl_gost stuff is in there for 2010 too; likewise, all of the videos from the cast are here too.
I tried to post the link but it would not allow me to because I have not made enough (5) post.

Re: 3ds Max 2009 (+Design) - Importons & Irradiance Particles
I fixed the link. We are not stickers about links here, we want the site to be useful to others, we ask that you link just as you did to their page an not to their content to follow proper internet ettiquette. You did good and thanks for sharing!

Re: 3ds Max 2009 (+Design) - Importons & Irradiance Particles
I have found something related to IP method. It’s for MAYA but still have same parameter and I believe it is very useful for starting.

General help
The MGC Chatbox Evo is really easy to use
You can :
- Send chats : you just have to enter the text in the dedicated input field and then to validate it by pushing the return key ou by clicking on the OK button.
- Format the chats :
once you un-collapse the chatbox formatting toolbar by clicking on the BBCode button, you have access to different formatting options for your chats. You can format a chat by selecting a part (or the totality) of it and then select one of the buttons/list. You can also add empty formatting tags by selecting nothing and clicking one of the buttons/menu thus allowing you to add the chat text afterwards between these tags.*
- Access to the different channels : you can have access to different channels restricted to only some usergroupds or for specifics use of the chatbox. The different channels are accessible from the buttons on the left of the chatbox.*
- Edit your chats (or others chats) : the edition of a chat can be done by a simple double-click on it.*
- Use specific commands : some commands can be accessible in the chatbox depending on the will of the administrator(s) of your forum. These commands let you execute specific actions of formatting, management, etc... You will herebelow the information on the command which are accessible to you. You must notice that you are not forced to use the command prefixes (/command_name) when you use them in the channel they are attached to (except in the general channel).*
* : Depending on the settings chosen by the administrator(s) of the forum, you might not have access to all these features.
