Hi everybody,
in this tutorial we follow the steps that I cover to design a concept-car.
First of all I want that everyone could read this links that helped me a lot in the research-study-drawing, tips that could be useful for all.
I think this could be sufficient to have a little view on car design sketching process.
Everybody could suggest anything here, Critics and Comments included. So this is my first tutorial step-by-step, I hope someone will be interested in.
Now the first step is the idea: we may choose what kind of car we want to do (Crossover, Coupè, Sportcar. Berlina or else). I think could be very interesting if we'll have a huge range of cars here.
So let's start the works.
Material that I use:
-white paper basis weight (a little transparent);
-Stanford coloured erasable pencils;
-soft rubber;
-Pilot G-TEC-C4 pen (if I want to draw with a pen);
-Faber Castel B propelling pencil.

Hey Speedy! I wanted to participate a little anyway and these type of excercises allow me to doodle with my old digitizer tablet, I am commited to getting competent with one of these things. I should really be using Painter or PhotoShop, but I have been playing with a little freebie program called "ArtRage" since it is simple to use. Here is a quick digital sketch, I am still very akward with the digitizer, of a car, when I have the time I would like to play with something more concept, but here is my first participation at sketching.

Nice entry TheAllusionist, you like the retrò style car, right?
I don't know ArtRage, is similar to Photoshop?
You have a nice drawing; is difficult to draw something so detailed with the digitalizer . Later I'll post the sketches to start the engines! LOL
Have a nice day, my friend.

First of all I study the main lines and the type of car that I want to develope:in this phase I do some little sketches on the paper. These are quick ones, not so detailed but useful to show the main body car.
Here you are an example:

Now I have focused my attention on a "normal" coupè, the same of my avatar. Details in this case (when I'll do the 3D) are few, because richness of signs could disturb the proportions of the concept or satisfy more the sight of the drawing, so I introduce only the necessary ones. I study the wheels/rims apart, only when I'm convinced I introduce them on. For now the are blank. Maybe someone could sketch one

The most important thing is the side view; from this we start to build the car in 3D. The perspective sketch helps to view better the concept, but it isn't so binding or unchangeable.

Nice work Speedline! Thanks for making me look bad! Retro? I just started sketching and that is what came out, what ever the first run laid out, I made work, no preconceived design, could have ended up looking like anything.

Hey I don't want to offend no one, you on first, LOL.
I told that because I've seen your car in a photo or I'm still confusing that?
Your design isn't bad, but pencil are more better than the digitalizer because is more sensitive to the hand, my POV.
So now I'm waiting the members' choosing on which one car(concept A or B) we want to build in 3D.
If nobody answers you will decide my friend
Have a nice day!
Roberto

I personally think the top one screams out Chrysler Concept car, something you would see at a detroit car show. With that in mind, I think that learning to model that one would apply more to the skills for modeling a production car. Don't get me wrong, I love the concept feel of the second one, I just think learning the first one would be more applicable to more cars. That is my two cents, I will gladly try to follow along with whatever the community wants.
